The Talking Walls

I saw the phrase “if these walls could talk” again.  It’s one of those ubiquitous phrases that I tire of reading or hearing.

But it inspired me a bit.  What if walls could talk?  I don’t know about you, but I’d find that disturbing.  “Hi, please come in.  Don’t mind the walls, they just blab alot.”  How difficult it would be to carry on a conversation, eh?  What with the talking walls in the background.  I mean, I assume they’d talk to each other.   They’d have more in common with another wall than with people.

Except for some people, I suppose.  There are those who are wall-like.

But, then, what if they did want to talk to people.  How would that work?  Would they suddenly grow mouths?  Would it be telepathic?  Would writing appear on the wall?  How eerie that would be; two metaphors in one.  The writing on the talking walls.

Would walls be able to relate to the things they witness?  When someone gets slammed into a wall, would the wall care about the violence perpetrated against that person or would it be more upset about the hole in itself?

I wouldn’t listen to walls.  They’re jerks.

I would say this is a short but very profound piece of writing. It’s also a nice read.

Very interesting. Of course, your pondering brings up other disturbing questions. Could walls hear? Could they see? I mean, that would be great for a wall to talk, but if it can’t see or hear then the whole talking part would be quite useless. Would walls have to learn to talk? In a new house would the walls talk baby talk? Oh, the quandries….
